Character: Nico Yazawa
Age: 17
Canon: Love Live! School Idol Project
Canon Point: After the third years song during the movie (more specifically, after μ's hides out at Honoka's home when they return from New York City to find out their popularity has exploded practically overnight).
Background:
Wiki link right here.
As I'm taking her from about midway into the movie for this series, and there is no summary for it on Nico's page, a brief summary of what happened that's relevant to Nico is below:
Not long after winning the second Love Live competition, a third competition is announced, to be preformed at the Tokyo Dome, which is far larger than the previous stage for the Love Live finals. It's during this time that the school's director requests that the girls assist in promoting the competition as it's most recent winners. The girls agree (Nico specifically mentions that they're still third years until the end of the month anyway) and are sent to New York City, where they preform Angelic Angel in Times Square after touring the city.
Upon returning to Akibahara in Japan, they find that their popularity has gone through the roof due to the attention their NYC performance received. It's bad enough for μ's that they are forced to sneak around in order to get home, as they seem to run into squealing fans no matter where they turn. This is the point I'm taking Nico from - shortly after the girls successfully sneak to Honoka's house to regroup and figure out just what happened while they were gone to make them so absurdly popular.
Personality:
"Nico-Nico-Ni~! I'll nico-nico-ni your heart! I'm Yazawa Nico-Nico, and I'll put a smile in your heart! Remember, I'm Nico-ni, and I love-Nico you!"
That sing-songy catchphrase gives off a cutesy, almost childish tone, which could easily make anyone who hears it think the speaker is either some sort of cutesy stereotype, very young, or maybe even some sort of children's show TV personality. What the listener more than likely is never going to expect is the kind of person Nico Yazawa actually is.
Abrasive, argument-prone, and quick to anger and annoy, Nico can be quite the hot-head, even in petty situations - or more appropriately, especially in petty situations. While she isn't throwing fits at all hours of the day, she is quick to take offense at anything she deems as an insult towards herself, and without anyone to hold her back, will aggressively argue points until there's none left - whether she's in the wrong or not. To top it off, Nico is not afraid to get physical if need be when truly angered, despite how tiny and frail she may look - something shown repeatedly throughout the first season especially, where Nico has purposely tripped Honoka while telling her to disband her group, and near the end of the first season, where she needs to be physically held back by Maki when Honoka says that she's quitting the group. This aggressive nature isn't made any less easy to trigger when one realizes how easy she gets jealous of others who have the sort of lifestyle she wishes she had - her fellow school idol group member Maki being an enormous source of this for her. In the movie, while leaving their plane after their trip back to Japan, Maki happens to offhandedly mention that she isn't used to flying coach (as her rich background usually has her flying first-class if she's going to be travelling). Nico immediately accuses her of bragging, glaring the whole time. This sort of situation wasn't even uncommon during the first and second seasons, where Maki had taken Nico and the other members of μ's to her family's summer house, leading Nico to show very obvious, outward jealousy. Her jealousy doesn't end at money concerns either, however - she also shows jealousy towards Eli, due to the other's mature, cool look compared to her own. This is shown most clearly when μ's all put on outfits from a maid cafe during their performance of Wonder Zone, making Nico jealous of how much better it looked on Eli compared to her.
While that may seem bad enough, this train hasn't reached it's last stop just yet. In addition to her issue with jealousy, Nico can also lie a fair amount as well - poorly, at that. During μ's first trip to Maki's family's beach house, while everyone else was simply impressed and marveling over it, Nico mentioned offhandedly that this was the sort of lifestyle she had in her own family as well, even going as far as to say that she had a maid who did all the cooking for her and she herself had never had to do it before. This lie falls completely on it's face not too long from then, as when it was time for dinner to be made, Nico was the one who did the cooking - and she did it with the sort of finesse that's impossible for a first-timer, making her lie obvious to everyone. Furthermore, she has a tendency to think far too highly of herself. At the beginning of the anime series, this issue was much worse, where Nico would go as far as to try to force herself into the leadership position for μ's early on ... though her attempts either failed terribly or were flat out ignored by the rest of the group, leading her to eventually give up. Even so, as far into the canon as the movie (which takes place after the end of the second anime season), Nico still seems to think she's the one who draws the crowds, commenting that she can't wait to see the Tokyo Dome filled with people there just to see her.
However, Nico isn't without her good sides, as bad as she tends to act more often than not. What with her most used reaction to things being abrasiveness, Nico actually cares an awful lot about things, including her friends and their training together as school idols. Often saying that something doesn't matter to her, there are usually indicators around or about her that give away how she really feels or felt about a situation. Several times throughout canon, Nico has done additional practice in private, but when meeting with her group later, claims she doesn't care enough to do such things - even though she usually has band-aids from slip-ups during her private practice all over her, making it incredibly easy to see through her tough-girl act. In addition, she's also shown up to meetings much, much earlier than everyone else due to nerves, claiming everyone else was just late. Nico also has a much more serious side to her as well, and can be quite heartfelt when appropriate. While camping outside with Maki and Eli, Nico had a personal side conversation with Maki, who is tasked with writing the group's music. As Maki was trying to write with the mentality that the song was for the third years in their group (Nico being one of them), Nico told her that the song should be for everyone in the group - not just her and the other two third years.
As a school idol, Nico takes her job very seriously, to the point where the rest of the group will occasionally look to her for advice on being idols. Her "Nico Nico Nii" catchphrase is something she sees as part of this job, as she believes an idol should form a "character" for people - idols are meant to be dreamlike, according to her, and catchphrases and characters are part of this. In addition to the catchphrase, this "character" of Nico's is bouncy, happy, and always smiling with a pose and a cutesy tone of voice, referring to herself in the third person the whole time. However, this is not the only "character" Nico has. When she removes the ribbons holding up her pigtails, Nico puts on a more mature tone of voice and way of speaking, acting more shy and serious than her "Nico Nico Nii" persona or her actual self. However, just like her more bouncy character, this one comes off as equally fake to those who already know the real Nico. However, she's the only member of the group to go as far as to do this, and believes she's the better idol of them for it.
Family especially is incredibly important to Nico - so much so that she had essentially been living a lie for her three younger siblings for quite a while just so they'd keep looking up to her. While Nico is not an orphan, she is in charge of taking care of her two younger sisters and younger brother while her mother is away on business, taking on part-time jobs and keeping their views of her as a super idol alive however she can. ... Unfortunately, this meant that she had told them that she was not only the center for μ's (the center being the most important role and also the leadership position, of which μ's has no true center
Adding on to the above, Nico expected a far poorer response to her lies about μ's to her family due to her past experience as a school idol in her first year. As she absolutely loves and looks up to idols, she had formed the Idol Research Club in her school and managed to gather up enough girls to form a school idol group. However, as her expectations for them were far higher than they cared for, they eventually abandoned her, quitting one by one and effectively stomping out her dream. Since then, the only member of the Idol Research Club had been Nico, until μ's joined it and had her added to their group. Nico is also very unlucky in addition to her jadedness. While this is usually played up for comedic effect in the anime, it has caused a pretty big problem for μ's in the past, as Nico had been chosen to play a lottery to see if their group could use the school's auditorium for a concert, and they lost entirely. This left μ's having to perform an important concert to raise their ranking to compete in the Love Live competition ... on the roof of the school building, in the pouring rain. This terrible luck worked for them much later when drawing for when μ's would perform during the Love Live finals, with them nabbing the last time slot, meaning their performance would be the last one everyone would see for the night.
To sum it up, Nico has a tendency to be grouchy, aggressive, pushy, and oftentimes flat out weird - especially when pulling out her idol persona on someone who already knows quite well what sort of person she really is. However, deep down, she cares an awful lot about what she does and those surrounding her, even if she tries to pretend she doesn't. Others knowing this hasn't, and likely never will, stop her from being a brat, though.
Abilities:
As much as Nico would like to think of herself as some sort of god-tier super idol that can make anyone fawn over her, she's as normal as it gets and has no real special abilities outside of being able to sing and dance. She does have skill in cooking, sewing and creating outfits, and hair styling, so she's not completely without non-idol-related skills.
Alignment:
Aligning Nico with Aiada. Nico can be made jealous rather easily, though she is less so at the moment thanks to her interactions with the other μ's members, making her more appreciative of what she does have - especially her friends.
Other:
Not terribly important to note, but Nico will be arriving in the outfit she happened to be wearing when μ's returns to Akihabara, rather than her usual school uniform and pink cardigan.
